Place & Clone

Cahill Lane runs through the family's original property, with family homes built along the lane. The Chardonnay block is planted entirely to Wente clone, whose naturally mixed large and small berries create concentration, texture and layered flavor.

Ripening

This is usually the final Walter Hansel Chardonnay block to be harvested. Its extended hang time contributes additional richness and aromatic depth while the Russian River Valley's cool nights help retain acidity and balance.

Viticulture

The block is estate grown and sustainably farmed. Canopy work gives Chardonnay clusters cool morning sun and afternoon protection, while detailed passes through the vineyard and crop thinning keep quality ahead of yield.

Vinification & Aging

Whole clusters are pressed directly and the juice ferments in French oak. Malolactic fermentation begins when primary fermentation is nearly complete. Weekly lees stirring for close to two months builds richness, followed by a total of nine months in barrel before bottling.

Profile & Pairing

Bright yellow with white mushroom, subtle musk, toasted baking spice, poached yellow apple and citrus zest. Supple, creamy and full-bodied, with ripe orchard fruit and an almond finish. Serve at 10-12°C with lamb, mushroom risotto, poultry or richer fish.
