The Estate Chardonnay draws from across Walter Hansel's Russian River Valley plantings. Its foundation includes the original 257 Chardonnay vines planted in 1975, joined in the reference blend by three acres of Davis Clone 5 and one acre each of Dijon Clones 95 and 76.
Warm afternoons and fog-cooled nights slow ripening in the southern Russian River Valley. The long growing season supports ripe orchard fruit while preserving the natural acidity that gives the wine depth, freshness and definition.
All Chardonnay is estate grown and farmed sustainably. Leaves are pulled to expose clusters to cool morning sun while maintaining afternoon shade. Yields are controlled by cluster thinning, typically to 18-22 clusters per vine.
Whole clusters are pressed immediately, then fermented in French oak from François Frères and Seguin Moreau. New oak varies from 20-26%. Malolactic fermentation begins near the end of primary fermentation; barrels are stirred weekly for almost two months and aged for nine months before bottling.
Bright yellow, with yellow apple, chamomile, baking spice, subtle musk and golden orchard fruit. Full-bodied and juicy, it finishes persistent and balanced. Serve at 10-12°C with halibut, roast chicken, lobster or creamy vegetable dishes.
A layered estate blend connecting Walter Hansel's first Chardonnay vines with multiple modern clonal blocks.
