Podere Giodo is the personal estate of Carlo Ferrini, a consulting winemaker who has advised producers since 1979. In 2002, after more than thirty years advising estates across Italy, he bought his first hectare of vineyard between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo, in the southern reaches of the Brunello di Montalcino zone. The name is a contraction of his parents’ names, Giovanna and Donatello. His daughter Bianca now runs the property day to day.
The estate farms six hectares of Sangiovese, planted to eight clones Ferrini selected over the course of his career, with sustainable practices and strict cluster selection at harvest. The gravity-fed cellar is built partially underground; fermentation takes place in steel, concrete, and terracotta, and the wines age in oak casks of varying sizes.
The Brunello di Montalcino debuted with the 2009 vintage. The range now also includes a second Brunello, Prètto; a Rosso di Montalcino; and La Quinta, a Sangiovese under the Toscana IGT label matured twelve months split between large oak casks of 2,500 and 3,500 litres and cocciopesto amphorae, then at least six months in bottle before release. On Etna, Ferrini farms Nerello Mascalese and Carricante as Alberelli di Giodo.
