Tenuta Licinia was founded in 2007 by Anne and Jacques de Liedekerke, who replanted the historic Sasso di Fata vineyard near Lucignano, where the provinces of Arezzo and Siena meet in the foothills of the Tuscan Apennines. Since 2020 the estate has been run by their grandson James Marshall-Lockyer, who came to the cellar from a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford.

The estate farms twelve hectares across five small sites, each chosen for its subsoil after a study of more than two hundred vineyards and olive groves in the surrounding hills — calcareous schist, marl, volcanic schist. Farming is certified organic and practising biodynamic; yields stay around 20–25 hectolitres per hectare and harvest dates are set by taste. The wines age in large-format casks, 25% new and never barriques, then rest in breathable concrete.

From the schist of the original vineyard come Sasso di Fata, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and Onda, pure Cabernet Franc; both are single-vineyard wines. Montepolli, the estate wine, joins Merlot, Petit Verdot and the two Cabernets on a terraced clay-limestone plot at Licinia, with fruit from the other sites. The vineyards lie at 360 metres, planted to Bordeaux varieties.
