The Forno family has farmed the hills of Santo Stefano Belbo since the mid-1600s; Pietro Forno bottled the estate’s first Moscato in 1940. Today brothers Giorgio, Fabrizio and Adriano Forno, the family’s fourth generation of growers, lead Tenuta Il Falchetto from the Ciombi hill, with six estate vineyards spread between Langhe and Monferrato: Santo Stefano Belbo and Castiglione Tinella on the Cuneo side, Agliano Terme and Calosso in the province of Asti.
Every parcel is worked by hand, from winter pruning to harvest, without insecticides or herbicides. Fermentations run in temperature-controlled stainless steel; the Barberas then spend twelve to fourteen months in oak, from 30-hectolitre casks to French barriques.
From Agliano Terme come the Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOCG bottlings Bricco Paradiso and Lurei; from sandy calcareous soils in Calosso, Santo Stefano Belbo and Castiglione Tinella comes Pietro Forno 1940, a Canelli DOCG Moscato named for the founder and drawn from vines averaging thirty-five years.
