In 1912 Giuseppe Sordo began cultivating vines and making wine in Garbelletto, a hamlet of Castiglione Falletto. His son Giovanni bought Nebbiolo vineyards across the Langhe from the 1950s onward; Giorgio Sordo took charge in 2001, and his daughter Paola now represents the fourth generation. The family farms 53 hectares across ten townships, from Barolo and Roero to the Timorasso vineyards of Colli Tortonesi.
Cover crops grow between the rows in place of chemical fertilizers, and vineyard treatments are limited to sulfur and copper. In the cellar, dug more than twelve metres into the hillside, each Barolo ages in large oak casks of 120 hectolitres.
In 2013 Giorgio bottled eight single-vineyard MGA Barolos in a single vintage; the estate lists eight crus across six townships, from Rocche di Castiglione, Villero and Monprivato at home to Gabutti in Serralunga, Monvigliero in Verduno, Ravera in Novello and La Serra in La Morra. Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d’Alba and Derthona complete the picture.
