Château Haut-Batailley is a Grand Cru Classé of Pauillac, ranked in the 1855 classification and defined in its present form in 1942, when the Batailley estate was divided in two. Since 2017 it has belonged to the Cazes family of neighbouring Château Lynch-Bages, with Jean-Charles Cazes directing both properties.
The vineyard stands on deep Garonne gravel, some 41 hectares under vine against the 22 in production when the Cazes family arrived, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. After detailed soil studies, the family began replanting long-fallow Pauillac land in 2018 — including massal-selection Petit Verdot taken from Lynch-Bages — and gave the estate its own dedicated technical team.
Jean-Charles Cazes has described the estate to Berry Bros. & Rudd as a more restrained expression of Pauillac than Lynch-Bages. The grand vin is joined by Verso, the second wine introduced under the Cazes family, drawn from younger vines and parcels not destined for the first label. Oenoteca buys directly on the Place de Bordeaux and imports Verso Pauillac for Texas.
